VEDADO SECONDARY SCHOOL [2011]

Location: Vedado, Havana, Cuba
Budget: Unknown
Type: Research
Status: Complete

Cuba is in the process of restructuring it’s schools (2011). Attempts are being made to accommodate three main school types within the city centre and bring education services closer to the urban population. One possible site is situated within Vedado, where the characteristic 100m x 100m grid interfaces with the main coastal road, the Malecon. This site already acts as a social condenser, being close the United States Office of Interests and the city’s main funeral home. Into this area of contrasting human emotions a new secondary school is proposed, with 280 students (aged 11-15) across three years. The secondary school reacts to the existing urban fabric and environmental conditions. Due to seasonal flooding, from coastal surges in the hurricane season, the school is raised above a plinth of adaptable space. It thus becomes a social beacon in the community that can act as a catalyst for further transformation. There is the potential for the space between the supporting columns to be appropriated and absorb existing social functions. The school is structured formally and programmatically by three elements, with these arranged so that a central ‘Heart’ space can provide public functions (library, dining, social space). These services are seen as the first elements of new infrastructural elements within the community that increases the scope of the services offered by a traditional secondary school.
