RAVENSBURY SQUARE [2008-2009]

Location: Manchester, United Kingdom
Budget: Not Applicable
Type: Residential, Masterplan
Status: Complete

Ravensbury Square is a response to the problems of urban and socio-economic decay occurring in the peripheral areas of Manchester City Centre, focusing on a community of East Manchester - West Clayton. The specific site was the subject of a Compulsory Purchase Order in 2008 and the Victorian terraces that once occupied it have since been demolished. It occupies a key location within the community, adjacent to primary link roads and the Ravensbury Primary School. Despite recent investment in the area the quality of housing and the overall built environment remains poor. Ravensbury Square is a proposal that, through its 54 dwellings and new public spaces, could raise the standard of the built environment within West Clayton. The 54 homes consist of a mixture of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom properties that look to challenge the preconceptions of affordable housing, calling for a new adaptive typology to meet the challenges of contemporary lifestyles. A flexible, adaptive density, allows residents to appropriate the home, developing them as and when required.
