PERFORMATIVE URBANISM [2011-2012]

Location: Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom
Budget: Unknown
Type: Research
Status: Ongoing

Performative Urbanism proposes six tactics (seeding, erasure, repair, belts, towers and adaptation) to provide phased development that is socially responsible, culturally aware and both fiscally and ecologically sustainable within the dynamic processes shaping Stoke-on-Trent today and in the future. Instead of proposing an urban core a dispersed field of targeted investment is put forward to develop new synergistic ecologies between the six towns. Stoke-on-Trent is thus reconstituted as a matrix of hybrid landscapes that seek to constantly utilize and then optimise multiple performance specialisms. Located on the edge of Fenton, a former clay pit offers an opportunity to test these strategies. A new tower is tasked with condensing multiple programmes, principally sport and materials science research, so that new unforeseen synergies can develop between the two.
