Luke Butcher

Luke Butcher [CV] is a designer with an interest in the built environment and author of The Architecture of the Profession. He is currently a Thouron Scholar at the University of PennsylvaniaSchool of Design, studying towards a Masters in Environmental Building Design (MEBD). Prior to this he studied at the Manchester School of Architecture between 2006 and 2012 and currently holds a first-class BA (Hons) Architecture, BArch with Distinction and MA Architecture + Urbanism with Distinction. In 2010 he co-founded Flex, a collaborative design practice focused on architecture and urbanism.

Luke received a first-class with honours Bachelor of Arts in Architecture in 2009, a Master of Architecture and Urbanism with distinction in 2011, and a Bachelor of Architecture with distinction in 2012, all from the Manchester School of Architecture (jointly run by the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University). His academic work has been recognised with a number of prizes and commendations, including a nomination for the RIBA Presidents Medals and an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award by the University of Manchester, both in 2009, and has been exhibited in Manchester, London and Vienna. Luke has also undertaken a period of study at the Manchester Business School in 2009, being granted a scholarship for a four week course entitle the "Mini-MBA High Flyer’s Summer Programme". In 2011 he spent three weeks studying as part of a winter school in Havana, Cuba, on a programme organised jointly by CUJAE and the Münster School of Architecture.

In September 2012 Luke took up a position as a Part II Architectural Assistant and Trainee Manager at Mace in London. He is currently on sabatical from the company whilst he purues his studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Mace is an international consultancy and construction company, offering integrated services across the full property and infrastructure life cycle. As part of his employment Luke also took part in the Graduate Management Training Programme, an exciting opportunity that will allowed him to work alongside programme and project managers, specialists in construction delivery and cost consultancy and facilities managers.

His previous experience in architectural practice, includes one year working in the Manchester studio of Building Design Partnership, where he worked on a £35 million education and community project – the Abraham Darby Sports and Learning Community. This period in a professional environment has built upon previous experience as a summer intern at Broadway Malyan and two separate periods of on-site experience, working for a construction company in Peterborough – Hamlet Construction. He has also been employed as a Teaching Assistant at the Manchester School of Architecture, working with students in the first year of the BA (Hons) Architecture course.

He has previously contributed to the webzine Notes on Metamodernism and Look Up Manchester. Luke has also been actively involved in Manchester's architectural community for a number of years, holding various positions within the Manchester Student Society of Architecture and being a student representative on the Manchester Society of Architects Council. In 2011 Luke was invited to join the RIBA Education Trust Fund Committee.

Originally from Peterborough in the United Kingdom, Luke has lived and worked in Manchester and London. He currently lives in Philadelphia, USA.

AfterGrowth 11th April 2014 | After Growth: Designing the Environmental Settlement
As part of the Master in Environmental Building Design program at PennDesign Luke Butcher has co-organised a Symposium entitled 'After Growth: Designing the Environmental Settlement'. Instigated by MEBD students six speakers, from a range of fields including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, historic preservation and ecology, were invited to speculate on the future of our settlements, after growth. Following speaker presentations a debate followed that explored what shape environmental settlement could take in a post-growth world, what can be achieved to progress positively to this condition, and what challenges lie in wait.

The subject of Luke Butcher's MA research, it is intended to provoke thought and debate within the wider architectural community, questioning the current model of practice in the UK through historical analysis of both the image and role of architects and an extensive industry survey; revealing a conflicted professional landscape.
ThouronAward 1st August 2013 | Thouron Award
Luke Butcher has been awarded a prestigious Thouron Award to study at the University of Pennsylvania. Established in 1960, the Thouron Award is a graduate exchange program between British universities and 'Penn', an Ivy League institution. Originally created to reinforce the 'special relationship' between the US and the UK, it sought to create an ever-growing number of leading citizens of these two countries who would have a thorough understanding of their trans-Atlantic counterparts. The Thouron Award is among the most generous exchange fellowships in the world, covering tuition fees and a provides a monthly stipend to help cover living costs.

Luke has been awarded a Bachelor of Architecture with Distinction from the Manchester School of Architecture (University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University), graduating at an official cermony at Bridgewater Hall.

Performative Urbanism, Luke Butcher's BArch thesis project, will be exhibitied between Saturday 16th June 2012 and Wednesday 13th June 2012 as aprt of the Manchester School of Architecture's Degree Show. His work is also featured in the 2012 Year Book which can be viewed [ONLINE].

At the End of Year Degree Show Luke picked up the Hays Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Professional Studies" at BArch level.

Luke has been invited to present his masters research, The Architecture of the Profession, at the second annual MA Architecture + Urbanism Colloquium. The event takes place on Thursday 6th October 2011 at the RIBA Hub in Manchester, starting at 2pm.

Research conducted by Luke will be exhibitied as part of the MA Architecture + Urbanism Degree Show 2011 at the RIBA Hub in Manchester. Luke recently completed the MA course and was awarded a distinction. The show runs from Thursday 29th September 2011 until Friday 14th October 2011. with an official opening taking place on Tuesday 4th October 2011.

RIBA Tough Times Student Forum ZAP 21st June 2011 | RIBA Tough Times Student Forum
Luke Butcher has taken part in the RIBA' 'Tough Times' Student Forum at Portland Place in London. Twenty-six students of architecture from across the United Kingdom attended the event which was an attempt to gather opinion from students about issues they are current facing.
ASN Meeting in Manchester 20th June 2011 | Architecture Students Network
At an event in Manchester Luke chaired the first meeting of a new national student body, the Architecture Students Network. A legacy project of the European Architecture Students Assembly held in Manchester in 2010 the new network will be an independent network of student representatives from the schools of architecture within the United Kingdom. The aims of the network will be to work to support and promote architecture student events, harness student opinion, and engage with other established, relevant educational organisations both nationally and internationally.

The Vedado Secondary School project (completed during the recent Caribbean Winter School alongside Carrie Bayley, Elke Schungel and Ana-Luise Ibarra) has recieved a Commendation in the Manchester Society of Architects Design Awards 2011, Student Category. An exhibition of the work is currently taking place at the CUBE Gallery in Manchester and is due to run until Friday 19th May 2011.
Caribbean Winter School

Luke Butcher will be attending the 2nd Caribbean Winter School in Havana, Cuba between February 21st 2011 and March 13th 2011. The three week programme has been organised by the Muenster School of Architecture, in cooperation with the Universitat Politèchnica de Catalyna (Barcelona) and University CUJAE (Havana).

EASA Identity Symposium 2nd August 2010 | EASA Symposium on Identity
As part of the European Architecture Students Assembly 2010, this year taking place in Manchester, Luke has chaired a symposium on Identity, this years theme. Attended by over 400 students speakers included Phil Griffin, Dr Isabelle Doucet (University of Manchester), Daisy Froud (AOC), John Robb, Gavin Elliott (BDP), and Peter Saville. KPF / AF Student Travel Awards Commendation 4th May 2010 | KPF/ AF Student Travel Awards
Luke has been awarded a Commendation in the recent KPF/AF Student Travel Awards for his project Ravensbury Square. The project will be exhibitied at the Architecture Foundation in October 2010.

Luke's project Ravensbury Square has recieved a the top student prize in the Manchester Society of Architects Design Awards 2010. An exhibition of the work is currently taking place at the CUBE Gallery until May 15th 2010 as part of the Manchester Architecture and Design Festival.
Blue Award 09 Exhibition 23rd April 2010 | Blue Award Exhibition at the Vienna University of Technology
Despite not picking up an award at the Blue Awards, recognising sustainable design and teaching in European Schools of Architecture, Luke's project, Ravensbury Square, has been selected for an exhibition of entries. The exhibition is to be held at the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, from April 23rd until April 29th.

Graduation 2009 9th July 2009 | BA (Hons) Graduation
Luke has been awarded a First Class Honours Degree from the Manchester School of Architecture (University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University), graduating at an official cermony at The University of Manchester's Whitworth Hall. Luke has also been awarded an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award by the University of Manchester, awarded to the top 0.5% of graduates, independent of degree subject.
